What is On the Wire:

Vincent Weller seeks a purpose. His girlfriend wants him to take the next step in their relationship, his parents want him to take his boring job seriously, and he finds himself staring down the barrel of an unfulfilling future. Then during a routine errand at a local convenience store, Vincent thwarts an attempted robbery and the accompanying rush sends his life spiraling down a different path which changes his life forever.

Searching for an escape from monotony, Vincent longs for the dangerous satisfaction he felt from his convenience store heroics. So he begins spending his nights as a vigilante, hunting for opportunities to enact justice in a city riddled with crime. These outings take their toll on Vincent as his brutal learning curve leaves its mark through lack of sleep, battle wounds and the stress of combat. With his personal relationships crumbling around him, Vincent struggles to balance his selfish desires for purpose and importance with maintaining the responsibilities of becoming an adult.

The lines of morality soon become blurred. Vincent hits the streets like a drug addict night after night to feed his growing risk addiction. To sustain this new lifestyle he begins doing whatever it takes to become a better athlete, including stealing to feed himself and taking performance-enhancing drugs. As each act of justice inflates his ego and he pushes away the people who care for him, Vincent retreats deeper into the dark persona that lies behind his mask.

Our Vision:

This film is essentially a “superhero” origin story. Beyond creating exhilarating action sequences, we want to shed light on the details of how a hero operates under self-guidance in a city that offers more resistance than support. Since Vincent is an avid comic book and movie fan, he takes his cues from the pop culture heroes he idolizes. Without the amazing powers of Spider-Man or the extreme wealth of Batman, Vincent must find ways to overcome these obstacles and become the hero he thinks he needs to be.

Details need to be addressed: How does he obtain his weapons and “costume”? How does he fund his budding operation? Are all the sacrifices worth it? And without enough rest, he can’t recover from his wounds…so how does he remain effective night after night while still maintaining his regular life? The bottom line is, he can’t. As this dark coming-of-age tale unfolds, his emotional journey unveils the gray area that lies between right and wrong.

Drama, humor, action and romance are all woven into the film's storylines. And even though Vincent travels down a morally ambiguous path, his personal experiences ground the story so that all viewers can connect with the film.

Production Plan:

Documentary-style handheld camera work combined with natural lighting and gritty fight sequences will provide a raw, intimate experience for the audience.
The film will be shot in the winter of 2007 over the course of four weeks. We will be shooting in HD with a two-camera setup. Our primary cast and crew have already been assembled, and we currently are storyboarding, rehearsing scenes and choreographing our ambitious fight sequences. Funding, of course, is the final step…
